CRA: Merry Christmas from the Centertown Recording Alliance

The Centretown Recording Alliance is back at it again. You may remember them from their Canada Day recording challenge or their first challenge earlier this year.

They're back with a Christmas edition where people were welcome to submit a Christmas song. There are some covers, some originals and some downright weird selections.

You can check it out at the Centretown Recording Alliance's page. Feel free to crank it loud at your next holiday party. I'm sure your parents will definitely enjoy Vaglab!

12.14 Kill All Redneck Pricks! A Documentary Film About A Band Named KARP !

Ottawa Explosion and Invisible Cinema presents...

KILL ALL REDNECK PRICKS!: A Documentary Film About A Band Named KARP (http://www.karplives.com/)

2011 / USA / 89 min / Blu-ray
Director: William E. Badgley Featuring: KARP, Kathleen Hannah, King Buzzo, Calvin Johnson, Kimya Dawson
Print Source: William E. Badgley

We are proud to present the Ottawa premiere of this documentary. An epic story of the rise and fall of the most hormonally overloaded band of punk-metal geeks to ever emerge from the mossy woods of Thurston County, Kill All Redneck Pricks takes you from the high school corridors and soggy chicken coops of Tumwater, WA, to the dizzying heights of punk rock stardom, only to make a shockingly painful crash landing. The players are real, and the stakes are life, death, and the inspired dreams of youth. King Buzzo, Justin Trosper, Kathleen Hanna, Kimya Dawson, and Calvin Johnson are just a few of the legion of friends and heroes that narrate the history and comic brutality of KARP. This is a vital story of the Pacific Northwest, loud music, and fragile humanity.

William Badgley will be in attendence.

Guest Bio

11.10 The Famines, The Nymphets, Dagger Eyes & Pregnancy Scares!

Ottawa Explosion and Davey Quesnelle present...

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 10TH

QUESNELLE FEST 2011!!!

It's that time of the year again! Davey is getting yet another year older and another year wiser. This year he was wise enough to only play one set which will probably be a whopping 10 minutes so that he can hang out and have fun with all of you!

Joining Davey in the celebrations are...

THE FAMINES (Edmonton/Montreal)
http://www.thefamines.ca/

This duo are no strangers to Ottawa. They've destroyed expectactions, hair length competitions, rock & roll music as we know it and a few beers have been shredded along the way. Two men with the power of ten will destroy you.

THE NYMPHETS (Stockholm/Montreal)
http://www.thenymphets.com/

This is another great duo who have played Ottawa a few times including a very memorable set at the Manx with the White Wires way back when. Fast and nervous punk.

DAGGER EYES (Montreal/Ottawa)
http://www.myspace.com/thedaggereyes

This band has been around for a year now. Here's the description I gave when I first heard the song Vampire back then: "Totally dark and vicious like getting chased into a dark alley by a razor-wielding psycho."

PREGNANCY SCARES (Ottawa)

FRIDAY OCTOBER 28TH 2011

BAD VIBRATIONS (Halifax, NS)
http://badvibrations.bandcamp.com/
http://badviben.tumblr.com/

Driving, energetic with great melodies and vocal harmonies. They sound like the "indie rock" bands of the early 90's, back when indie rock wasn't a four letter word that evoked the image of boring soulless music played by bands with 9 members minimum.

ROBERTA BONDAR (Ottawa, ON)

From The Back Of The Room

The documentary FROM THE BACK OF THE ROOM is premiering tonight at 9:15 at the Mayfair Theatre.

Covering 30 years of female involvement in the DIY punk/Riot Grrrl scene Including interviews with members of Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, Thulsa Doom, Harum Scarum and many more!

Many people have the impression that the Riot Grrrl movement in the mid-90s was the end-all, be-all of female involvement in DIY punk. This is definitely not the case! Plenty of amazing ladies prior to this era paved the way for it, and plenty of amazing ladies continue to help keep DIY together today. This documentary chronicles the past 30 years of female involvement in DIY punk, and has interviews with over 30 women from across the country, ages 17 to 40. Race, gender, sexuality, motherhood, class, and activism are all addressed in this film, giving a more complete picture of how these women participate in the DIY community, and how it affects their daily lives.

"An exhaustive, diverse, and thoughtful meditation on women in the punk community" - Washington City Paper

"Engrossing... a lovely and important film about people who've fallen in love with music, and why they've chosen to pursue that path despite a seemingly endless array of obstacles" - Worcester Telegram & Gazette

Germ Attak: 2005 - 2011.

Last Saturday Ottawa lost yet another punk band. GERM ATTAK called it quits after 6 years of putting out records and touring the globe. Here's Jo's reasons why GERM ATTAK is breaking up:
1: while some old bands may be good live, their new records are terrible. thats why weve decided to quit while ahead.
2: when simon left the band in december 2010,we decided to break up.we just had to do a tour to support our new record.
3: will hates playing drums.rick isnt a bass player:hes a guitar player.and i have no motivation to do anything in life anymore.
4: we have done everything there is to do.we have 10 records and have toured almost all over the world. we have done more than any other ottawa punk band has ever done.
5: time to move on. stagnation is a killer.
6: not much people are interested in real punk.most punks like crust, retro american hc,d-beat,grind,pop punk ..no one gets it.
Here's the brand new video for "Face The Reaper" from their Fear Of The Unknown LP.
You can check out their discography HERE and download most of it HERE.

Jo does a lot of studio projects you as well. Check out IRON DOGS, PEACH KELLI PUNK, BLUE CROSS and many more.

On Monday there's a basement show happening...

The Ghostwrite (Pittsburgh) is on tour with Jon Creeden (of dead weights, supporting his solo act). We are throwing together a show to support The Ghostwrite. Dead Weights will be playing a set to support our friends. Leading the night will be Ottawa's own fresh-off-bluesfest CURRENTS, and we will also be supported by a ROBOTS EVERYWHERE! set.

It's going to be a kickass basement show.

The basement is 452 Gladstone.
...
Respect the space or we won't be doing shows there again. The cover is PWYC with a suggested donation of $5. Don't have $5? Scrounge up something and we'll still thank you for it. Bring your friends. Show them some good bands. Make it a night to remember.

I'm posting the tentative doors for 7 PM, please check back and see if this changes. I will make announcements as well.

CURRENTS
http://www.myspace.com/currentsgoto11
Ottawa post-punk, in the vein of small brown bike. Think hot water music meets planes mistaken for stars.

DEAD WEIGHTS
http://deadweights.bandcamp.com/
Creeden will be home from tour briefly for this show, so encourage him to play semi-barefoot. Again. We will be playing our brand of pop-punk and complaining about assholes.

THE GHOSTWRITE (Pittsburgh, PA)
http://theghostwrite.bandcamp.com/
A long way from home, on tour, playing a unique style of acoustic, folk, electronica, punk, etc. will be a really unique and memorable set from THE GHOSTWRITE. Please come out to support this man.

ROBOTS EVERYWHERE!
http://www.myspace.com/killrobotseverywhere
A man, his guitar, and often a drum machine. You will have fun. Just believe in... robots everywhere! Perfect party tunes by your new best friend phil.

Centretown Recording Alliance

The Centretown Recording Alliance is a group of local musicians featuring members of The Allrights, The Mnemonics, The Johnnies, etc. etc. etc.  These tireless people are constantly starting new bands or one-off projects to keep themselves entertained.

In January, they created a recording challenge where everyone had a month to come up with a recording of some sort. The results can be found on the CENTRETOWN RECORDS bandcamp page.

Just in time for Canada Day there was a new challenge set for the CRA: Record a cover of a Canadian song. The results were interesting and you can hear them HERE.

My original top picks were the songs done by VAGLAB, D$MONEY feat. LOSERGEEK and LOSERSWEEPERS take on Concrete Blondes' "Joey" which was then disqualified due to the fact that Concrete Blonde is in no way shape or form a Canadian band. This bumped up JOHNNY JUMP-UP & THE ALL-WRONGS into the Top 3!

Thanks for the good times!

White Lung, Nu Sensae & Pregnancy Scares!

Ottawa Explosion presents...

Tuesday July 5th 2011

White Lung (Vancouver)
http://www.whitelung.ca/
http://whitelung.tumblr.com/

Mix the punk venom of some of the more notorious riot grrrl bands of the 90’s with the guitar noodling and tempo of UK post punk by way of John Reis and you get something pretty close to WHITE LUNG.

Nu Sensae (Vancouver)
http://www.myspace.com/nusensae

Simultaneously active in Vancouver's noise rock scene and its seedy crust punk underbelly, Nü Sensae bridge the gap with a sonically bludgeoning bass-and-drum attack. With TV, Death and the Devil, the duo successfully abridged their simple set-up to a cohesive album with a newfound appreciation for dynamics. Strengthened by softer sections, rare moments of singing and relatively longer ideas (two songs break the three-minute mark), the album pushed Nü Sensae forward without sacrificing any of the maniacal, sludgy riffing or doom-laden lyrics that made them so endearing.

Pregnancy Scares (Ottawa)
http://pregnancyscares.tumblr.com/

Pregnancy Scares was so insane that I got kicked in the groin by the lead singer and someone spilled a drink on me.
This was some crazy house show punk style

Doors at 9 pm. Bands at 9:30.
$6.

The White Wires - "I Remember You" Live!

I was able to catch The White Wires play at Fever Fest this Saturday.
It was a fun outdoor show in a tent in a parking lot.
They played a new song called "I Remember You" and the recording I made is a bit rough but the song is insanely catchy nonetheless. Can't wait for them to put out another record!

Upcoming Shows!

Here are a couple shows happening in the next couple of days. We aren't putting these shows on but we want to spread the word!

Tonight!

"Come fucking party with friends, an amazing band from Montreal, and some of your Ottawa favorites. I'm excited to play with some of MY favourite bands, and partying in a basement is the fucking cherry on top.

The basement is 452 Gladstone.

Respect the space or we won't be doing shows there again. The cover is PWYC with a suggested donation of $5. Don't have $5? Scrounge up something and we'll still thank you for it. Bring your friends. Show them some good bands. Make it a night to remember. Kick off the summer right!

I'm posting the tentative doors for 7 PM, please check back and see if this changes. I will make announcements as well.

Laureate (Montreal)

Combing some melodic post-hardcore/emo & pop punk are Montreal's Laureate. Reminiscent of their influences ranging from Samiam & Seaweed to Saves the Day & Jawbreaker. They have notable vocal hooks which will sooth any pop sweet tooth and fans of early 2000 'emo rock' circa Brandston, JEW, TBS, etc. Get their demo free on their bandcamp and see for yourself.

http://laureate.bandcamp.com/

http://www.myspace.com/laureatemusic
http://twitter.com/laureatemtl

Dead Weights

Playing catchy punk rock with themes of sardonic discontent for your peers, government towns, life, cops, and politics. Sounding sometimes reminiscent of Jawbreaker, Leatherface, Dillinger Four, and other bands that you should probably listen to instead. Features ex and current members of CATCH OF THE DAY, WOOKA TRIBE, I REFUSE, and JON CREEDEN.

The debut 7" EP (Sick of Deja Vu) is currently being mastered and there may be updates before this show:

http://deadweights.bandcamp.com/
http://www.myspace.com/deadweightsband
http://www.facebook.com/deadweights

Benevenstanciano

This band is too fucking good. Think of all the reasons you like punk rock, basement shows, and hanging out with good friends. This is basically what I think of when I casually drift off into daydreams about how fucking awesome this band is on a daily basis. Comprised of ex members of Ottawa legends TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM and CRITICAL CONVICTIONS is a solid crew of guys playing fast, rowdy, and catchy punk rock the way it was meant to be played. Think of Dillinger Four and then think of every reason you've ever liked NO IDEA RECORDS.

Motivator

A recent addition to Ottawa punk bills, but no strangers to our scene, are Motivator. Members from past and present groups Alaskan, Boar, Between the Broken, The Wishlist, Open Arms, etc. etc. You get the point. Listen to their recordings on bandcamp. They graciously posted lyrics on their tumblr so you can sing a long. You'll want to. They remind me of something between American Nightmare, Another Breath, MLIW, with a touch of Kid Dynamite. Your new favourite local hardcore band. They recently put out a cassette tape and probably have merch. Thank me later.

JEFF the Brotherhood tomorrow night!

Don't forget!!!!

Ottawa Explosion presents...

Wednesday June 22nd!

Jeff The Brotherhood (Nashville, TN)
http://jeffbrotherhood.blogspot.com/

Jake and Jamin Orrall, aka JEFF The Brotherhood, are seen by many to be latter-day pioneers of the Nashville rock scene, but they see themselves as brothers who can't remember not playing music together for fun. Their family-owned, vinyl-centered record label, Infinity Cat Recordings, has been a pillar of support for Nashville bands since 2002 (with 60 releases to date) and was named "Nashville's Best Record Label 2010" by the Nashville Scene. But their first love has always been the Brotherhood known as JEFF.
Known for their relentless touring and their "we'll play anywhere" mentality, they have built a reputation for stripping rock music down to it's basics, and delivering mind-bending live shows with Jamin's three drums and three cymbals and Jake's three-string guitar and ferocious vocals. JEFF The Brotherhood's work ethic practically defines D.I.Y., from their simple but compelling videos to their self-produced and critically acclaimed albums, EP's and singles.

Uncle Bad Touch (Montreal, QC)
http://www.unclebadtouchband.com/

Mikey from Priestess with his girlfriend, Kathryn, and their drummer-friend, Shawn spent two weeks in the summer jamming and recording in Mikey's kitchen. As they finished each song, they put them up on myspace, facebook and posted to Stillepost. There was an amazing reaction to their, fuzzy, catchy, hooky tunes recorded on Garageband. They spent the rest of the summer playing sweaty loft parties and bbqs and are now poised to be one of the new breakout bands from Montreal this coming year. Their super lo-fi, fun, fuzzy, garagy sound and loveable live show is infectious. Mikey and Kathryn are such a cool, loveable couple to see up front and center. Already darlings of the Montreal scene, they're now getting attention from usa labels, bloggers, press,etc..

Peach Kelli Pop (Ottawa, ON
http://www.myspace.com/alliehanlon

Peach Kelli Pop is the solo project by White Wires drummer Allie Hanlon, who released her debut self-titled LP of lo-fi summertime lovey-dovey pop jams last year on Going Gaga Records (and now reissued by Infinity Cat). Maybe the world up and decided that they weren’t too cool for fun pop songs after all. Whatever it is, if this development keeps bringing us bands like Peach Kelli Pop, we should all be grateful.

Doors at 9 pm.
$8.

Ottawa Explosion: Thursday Videos!

Here's a couple of videos from the first night of Ottawa Explosion.

Thanks!

A huge THANKS to everyone who came out to the shows! We really appreciate everyone coming out early to catch the opening bands and sticking around to catch every band. This weekend was the absolute best and We look forward to having another huge party next year.

A huge THANKS to all the bands who played. Most of the bands who played this weekend were local bands and they were ALL amazing. It is absolutely insane how great bands in this city are and we are very lucky to have them. The styles and genres differed widely but the quality never wavered. Mind blowing. Thanks to the out of town bands for traveling all the way here and killing it!

A huge THANKS to everyone who helped out behind the scenes, doing doors, selling merch, carrying/driving gear, etc. We couldn't have done it without you.

A huge THANKS to Yogi, Adam & co. (Babylon), Chris & co. (Mavericks), Darrin & co. (Vertigo), John & co. (Birdman) and Bill & co. (House) for providing spaces for us to play in. Mandi (Auntie Loo's) for cupcakes and treats and Yogi's buddies for BBQ-ing. Thanks for keeping me alive.

The weekend is over but there are always great things happening in this city. We can always be having this much fun. You can hear about the shows we're doing by checking out this site or by "like"-ing our Facebook page.

I talk WAY too much so I'll end it here!

THANKS!
