may day

may 1st not only marks EXILE INFO SHOP's one year anniversary but they're actually moving to a bigger space down the hall from their old location. they have a lot of things to offer such as 4 computers with free internet access, a lending library of books and dvd's as well as books and zines and whatnot for sale. it's a volunteer-run space so if you're interested in volunteering or simply just checking the place out, this party could be a good excuse to finally check it out. they're located at 256 BANK street at COOPER. they're taking over the spot that used to be A&H records. they're open from 12 pm to 8 pm wednesday to sunday. FB

go check that out then head on down to the BYTOWN TAVERN for ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY. i will play SHAVED WOMEN or DO THEY OWE US A LIVING if enough people ask for it.

LORDS are playing END HITS on FRIDAY. they rip super hard and basically bridge the gap between the speed and intensity of the FIRST FOUR YEARS and the riffs and attitude of the MY WAR and beyond years. come to think of it, they probably like ROLLINS BAND more than BLACK FLAG. they're playing with CLOAK/DAGGER who are clearly fans of BLACK FLAG/SWIZ and HOT SNAKES/DRIVE LIKE JEHU since every song sounds like a mix of those bands. it's just the two bands so it's going to be short and sweet. bring your skateboard. it's gonna be a THRASH ZONE. 8 pm. $8. AA. FB

EXCLAIM! magazine reviewed the HOLY COBRAS cassette.

Holy Cobras
Keep Your Hands Off My Stuff

By Sam Sutherland

The second release from cassette-only label Telephone Explosion, Keep Your Hands Off My Stuff sounds pretty perfect coming from tiny, shitty spools of analog tape. Hailing from our nation’s capitol and playing fuzz-drenched garage punk that makes models like Julian Casablancas quake in their Cons, Holy Cobras kind of sound like White Light/White Heat-era Velvet Underground playing twice as fast and without any of John Cale’s avant-garde deviations. Songs like “Stormy Weather” offer some blues flavour before kicking back into pure rock’n’roll territory, while “Sun Inside” is pretty much the Stooges with a keyboard, which is awesome. (Telephone Explosion)

rocket to russia

for the past couple of weeks i've been listening to this great radio show from halifax called ROCKET TO RUSSIA. it's hosted by a fine gentlemen by the name of gerry hubley and is an hour and a half of punk rock greatness. the theme song for his show was written and performed by STATUES which you can hear here. there have been phone interviews with illustrious guests such as NICK FLANAGAN of BRUTAL KNIGHTS and IAN MACKAYE of some bands no one really knows....

it broadcasts every wednesday night at 8pm EST which you can stream online from the CKDU website. if you can't listen to it live you can easily listen to it at your convenience since every episode has been archived!!!

kids don't follow

SEDATIVES played in montreal on saturday night at KATACOMBES. it was a really fun show with a bunch of great bands but THE WALNUT KIDS were my personal favorite. they seemed pretty young and they played catchy power pop with great guitar leads and relentless drumming. they even covered STIFF LITTLE FINGERS and THE BOYS which was the icing on the cake. they'll hopefully be coming to ottawa sometime this summer. if they do, you'll be sure to hear about it here.

i missed almost all of the set by 3-D KIDS since i was driving the gear back to our friends house but apparently they sounded like they should be on RIP-OFF RECORDS and CONFUSERS ended the night with their catchy punk rock.

so weak so weak

april's week of craziness has come and gone. the dirtbombs show on tuesday wasn't the greatest in my opinion. i don't really know that band that well and a lot of people told me that they are incredible live but they really didn't deliver. the first few songs were pretty cool but after that i got uninterested. when they played one of the only songs i knew it sounded slow and unenergetic.

the next night was great. after months of anticipation it was finally time for jay reatard to play ottawa and he did not disappoint. they ripped through one song after another most of them from the blood visions lp with a couple of songs from the singles thrown in. unfortunately the bass player's amp fucked up so there was a bit of a wait there for a few minutes and they played a couple of songs without bass but it was still great.

i then spent the weekend in cleveland for HORRIBLEFEST. saw some great bands, saw some horrible ones but nevertheless had an amazing time. thanks to ian for organizing everything.

highlights: HOMOSTUPIDS, DAILY VOID, CLOCKCLEANER, MY MIND'S EYE RECORD STORE & HODAD'S RECORD STORE WHO SOLD ALMOST 600 DOLLARS WORTH OF RECORDS TO US, BRUTAL KNIGHTS, CHEAP TRAGEDIES, HUMAN EYE, IAN GETTING MISTAKEN FOR TIMMY VULGAR, SLEEPING THROUGH THE EARLY SHOW, MEETING SOME COOL PEOPLE, THE VEGAN INQUISTION, WEIRDO MOTEL, THROWING AN ASSHOLE INTO A WALL, ROCK N' ROLL HALL OF FAME...

lowlights: STUPID ASSHOLES WHO TRY TO ACT "WILD" BUT ARE JUST LAME, SHITTY BANDS, IAN GETTING HIT BY A FAX MACHINE, OVERPRICED SHITTY TRUCK STOP FOOD, MISSING MOST OF THE ACOUSTIC HC COVERS SET, VEGAN PIZZA PLACE CLOSED, STEVE MISSING CLOCKCLEANER, SMOKING INDOORS, IAN GOING DEAF, NOT BEING ABLE TO CHECK OUT THE OBSERVATION DECK BECAUSE IT WAS OVERPRICED, IAN GETTING MISTAKEN FOR TIMMY VULGAR, FORGETTING MY CAMERA FOR THE SATURDAY SHOW, ROCK N' ROLL HALL OF FAME...

"that was a kick in the butt ........................... and a slice of pizza"

SEDATIVES played our first out of town show on saturday night in beautiful montreal. we played at BARFLY with SONOROUS GALE from buffalo and PREYING HANDS who are from montreal and were playing their first show. they feature ex-members of BALLAST and LAST DAYS and play melodic crust and they ripped pretty hard. a bunch of friends from ottawa came up to hang out and go to the show and we really appreciate it. for those of you who weren't there, you can relive some of the highlights here.
